More iOS Patents for Apple

Apple has been awarded patents for the iOS slide to unlock feature as well as keyboard pop. Keyboard pop is the way the keys on the iOS keyboard pops up to show an enlarged view of itself when you’re typing on it.

When Apple announced the iPhone back in 2007, CEO Steve Jobs made a clear point that they want to protect as much of the iPhone’s intellectual property as possible. After three years, the United States Patent and Trademark Office finally awarded two of the most notable and visible aspects of the iOS.

While these seem like trivial concepts, they were not used in phones before and its in Apple’s best interests to ensure they secure these patents. Apple is no stranger to patents and litigations. If it hadn’t patented these interface elements, there’s a good chance that someone else applies to patent the features and files a lawsuit against Apple. It sounds absurd but it has happened before.

As far as Apple’s chief rivals are concerned, it doesn’t seem like an issue that should bother them. Google’s Android uses a different and customizable motion gesture to unlock its phones while the BlackBerry uses a physical method. Having these patents mean Apple can now protect itself from those who are keen to use these features without their permission.
