Radeon HD 6990, Features

The HD 6990 is basically two Cayman boards combined together for almost double the processing power. As such, it is also equipped with the same set of features, including:

Enhanced Quality Anti-Aliasing (EQAA)

AMD PowerTune Technology

amd hd 6950 powertune default — HD 6990’s AMD PowerTune feature can be accessed through the ATI Overdrive tool.

Dual BIOS

Like the previous HD 69xx models, the HD 6990 also comes equipped with two switchable BIOS chips. You can select which one to activate via a small switch located on top of the card, near the Crossfire connector.

The OC Profile BIOS on the HD 6990 is sealed by default.

In contrast to the HD 6970/ 6950 where the second BIOS acts as a backup, on the HD 6990, the second BIOS stores an Overclocking profile which, when activated, will increase the graphics card’s core frequency by 50 MHz. AMD advises to read the manual at www.amd.com/6990support before attempting to access this feature.

Now, let’s take a look at the graphics card itself, VTX HD 6990.

Sales package and contents

Two female mascots from AMD (Ruby) are displayed on the front, perhaps representing the dual GPU this card contains.

AMD did no holding back when they designed this board. That can be seen from the list of features found written on the package box.


Eyefinity, is, of course, one of the prime offerings.



A generous accessory bundle can be found inside. VTX provides all the necessary display converters (mini DP to DisplayPort, 2x DVI, HDMI) that should come in handy when you are about to make an Eyefinity setup.
