Review VTX3D AMD Radeon HD 6990 (Antilles): The Fastest Graphics You Can Get, for Now
Conclusions

AMD has successfully claimed the title of “the world’s fastest graphics”. Our tests show that HD 6990 performs between 30-35% faster than a GeForce GTX 580, NVIDIA’s current top offering. AMD is a step ahead in this race, at least for now.
Performance Comparison: HD 6990 VS HD 6970/ 6950 in Crossfire
When it comes to pure performance, the HD 6990 sits between two HD 6950 and two HD 6970 in crossfire. This is clearly the result of lower operating frequencies compared to the latter. It’s worth remembering that AMD supplies an extra OC profile with the HD 6990 that can be used to harness the full potential of this card.
VS GTX 560 Ti/ GTX 570 SLI
Two GeForce GTX 560Ti in SLI proved to be a tough competition for the HD 6990. They could easily surpass the HD 6990 in tessellation-intensive benchmarks such as the Unigine Heaven and Lost Planet 2. Price wise, at around US$ 250 each, two GTX 560 Ti cards should be fairly close to HD 6990’s price point. Not to mention the dual-GTX 570 in SLI, which also offer remarkable performance when it comes to multi-GPU processing. Nevertheless, the HD 6990 still owns a fair advantage in some titles, including Alien Versus Predator, Metro 2033, and a couple of DirectX 9/10 based games. Additionally, although it is very large for a single card, you do not need to use a second PCI-Express x16 slot to employ HD 6990’s multi-GPU capabilities.
More GPU, Less Power, More Efficient
As we learned later on during our tests, the HD 6990 is not just “two Caymans on one board”. The HD 6990 is far more power-efficient compared to Radeon HD 6970 in Crossfire, consuming 120 watt less power than the latter.
The Perfect Solution for Eyefinity
In our opinion, the incredible raw power of the HD 6990 shows that it is meant for multi-monitor gaming (Eyefinity). So, for our next article we put the HD 6990 to the test using three monitors (which increases the total resolution to 5760×1080) to run the benchmarks. Also, you can expect to find a full review of NVIDIA’s answer for the challenge AMD presents with its HD 6990. The war is heating up. Stay tuned to JagatReview.com to receive more updates!
