Review OCZ RevoDrive X2: Double the Board, Twice the Speed!

The RevoDrive X2 is very fast indeed! Using this PCI-Express x4 SSD drive, we managed to surpass the SATA-II (6 Gbps) bandwidth limitation that could otherwise prevent conventional SATA-II devices from reaching extraordinary speed. That fact can easily be seen in our benchmark result graph. Suffice to say, RevoDrive X2 is almost twice as fast as the first RevoDrive.

Additionally, OCZ manages to address the junk data problem in RevoDrive X2 by implementing a garbage collection feature. This will help clean the accumulated junk data from the drive’s flash memory. However, the garbage collection is only triggered when the computer is turned on and in idle condition. The entire process takes around 4 hours to complete, and this leaves users with something to consider should they decide to purchase this high-end storage product.

As the X2 is positioned in a roughly similar market with the original RevoDrive, it serves as an excellent storage media for performance demanding scenarios. Enthusiast gamers willing to spend the big bucks could enjoy faster-than-ever game loading times, while professionals could rely on its amazing data transfer speed. Unfortunately, since the garbage collection feature is limited to compressible files only, picture and video editors are unlikely to benefit from this particular functionality. Unless they output the results in uncompressed formats (such as AVI for videos or RAW for pictures), the RevoDrive X2 won’t be able to fully recover its performance due to junk data accumulation.
