GeForce GTX 960M tidak lain merupakan reinkarnasi dari GTX 860M “Maxwell” dengan peningkatan pada sisi clock speed GPU. Dua graphics card notebook/laptop tersebut sama-sama diperkuat chip GPU GM107 berbasiskan arsitektur Maxwell 1st Generation dimana di dalamnya telah ditanam 1,87 milyar transistor dengan menggunakan proses fabrikasi 28 nm.

GeForce GTX 960M dan GTX 860M “Maxwell” sama-sama dilengkapi 640 CUDA Cores, 40 Texture Units, dan 16 ROP Units. GeForce GTX 960M dilengkapi memori tipe GDDR5 dengan kapasitas maksimal 4 GB dan terhubung dengan chip GPU melalui memory bus 128-bit.

Chip GPU GeForce GTX 960M beroperasi dengan nilai base clock 1096 MHz dan berkat teknologi GPU Boost 2.0, kecepatan tersebut dapat ditingkatkan lebih tinggi lagi hingga mencapai nilai maksimal sebesar 1202 MHz. Semnentara itu untuk chip memori GDDR5 dioperasikan pada clock speed 5000 MHz (efektif).
