Membawa nama produk serupa satu sama lain, GeForce GTX 980 pada perangkat notebook/laptop memang mewariskan spesifikasi hardware sama seperti versi desktop. GeForce GTX 980 (Notebook) diotaki chip GPU GM204 dengan 16 unit SMM (Streaming Multiprocessor) aktif atau jika diterjemahkan di dalam gaphics card mobile tersebut terdapat 2048 CUDA Cores, 128 Texture Units, dan 64 ROP Units. GeForce GTX 980M sendiri juga ditenagai chip GPU GM204 tetapi telah mengalami pemangkasan spesifikasi sehingga hanya 12 unit SMM aktif. Berbasiskan arsitektur GPU Maxwell 2nd Generation, GM204 dibangun menggunakan 5,2 milyar transistor dengan menggunakan proses fabrikasi 28 nm.

NVIDIA menetapkan base clock speed GPU GeForce GTX 980 (Notebook) pada nilai minimum 1064 MHz dan dapat naik lebih tinggi lagi berkat teknologi GPU Boost 2.0. Walaupun begitu, NVIDIA memberikan keleluasaan kepada produsen notebook/laptop dalam menentukan berapakah angka base clock speed GPU GeForce GTX 980 (Notebook). Pada Xenom Hercules HC17S, nilai base clock speed GPU GeForce GTX 980 (Notebook) berada pada angka 1190 MHz dengan nilai boost clock GPU mencapai 1228 MHz. Sementara itu untuk nilai clock speed memori dipatok pada angka 7012 MHz. GeForce GTX 980 (Notebook) dilengkapi chip memori tipe GDDR5 dengan kapasitas hingga mencapai 8 GB dan terhubung dengan chip GPU melalui memory bus 256-bit.
