Kingston DT Ultimate USB 3.0: Now This is a Real “Flash” Drive!

USB flash drives have come a long way to become one of the most widely used storage media these days. They’re small, fit easily into your pocket, and can be used with practically any computer with a USB port. However, they tend to be inconvenient when used to move large amounts of files, since the process can be uncomfortably slow due to limited data transfer rate. Now, how can we solve that problem? There’s a simple solution to that problem: use a faster interface.

Meet the Kingston Data Traveler (DT) Ultimate 16 GB, a flash drive that not only packs large storage capacity, but also comes equipped with the speedy USB 3.0 interface. Yes, you read that right, USB 3.0, with a theoretical speed 10 times faster than that of the previous USB 2.0. It’s also backward compatible, so you can use it on older systems just as easily, albeit with far reduced transfer rate.

The DT Ultimate uses a cap to secure the USB connector head. This may seem rather impractical for those who often forget to put things back in place, but at least the cap is large enough and easy to find. Still, you need to be careful and keep it close at hand.

For a flashdisk, the Kingston DT Ultimate is rather large and cumbersome. If your USB ports are lined up close to one another, this flash disk would possibly block access to the USB port(s) located right next to it. To avoid that, you can use a USB 3.0 compatible extension cable. We also noted that the flash drive’s body gets uncomfortably warm after a while, just like the other first-generation SUB 3.0 flash drives in general.
