Kingston DT Ultimate USB 3.0: Now This is a Real “Flash” Drive!
Conclusions
Kingston has delivered a break through, our test shows. Thanks to its USB 3.0 interface, the DT Ultimate is at least three times faster than previous flash drives. In theory, USB 3.0 offers ten times the speed of USB 2.0. This first-generation USB 3.0 flash drive has impressed us already. We can only imagine what it would be like with later flash drives that could take full advantage from USB 3.0’s bandwidth.
There are some downsides though. First off, in terms of physical dimension, the Kingston DT Ultimate is relatively large for a flash drive. It could potentially obstruct the USB ports located right next to where it is plugged. Secondly, the device gets warm after a while. This could worry you a bit at first, but rest assured, the unusual heat has no effect on its performance. For our benchmark runs, the flash drive was used continuously for more than 5 hours and we didn’t notice any speed drop during that time.
Whether you use it to copy your digital photos or move any other large files around, this flash drive will get the job done fast. The impressive speed makes it suitable for anyone who needs a speedy storage device that would still slip easily into their pockets. You should even be able to install an entire computer game into the DT Ultimate and run it directly from the flash drive without experiencing any slight performance reduction compared to ordinary hard drives. Yes, it’s that fast.
Pros
- High read and write performance
Cons
- Gets unusually warm when in use
- Rather bulky for a flash drive
